I’ve been tuning in for awhile now. Sometimes it’s initiated by me, other times I just get smacked over the head with messages. God talks to me through dreams and songs, books and poetry, fortune cookies, nature, and whispers.
But how do I know it’s Spirit’s message and not my own? I could say I just know, but that’s not very helpful. Usually the messages are either a) something I don’t want to hear and make me fidgety or b) make me think. There are the simple, sweet messages too, like a heart-shaped rock on a bad day or a random quote that turns out to be exactly what I needed to hear.
I know it’s Spirit talking because the things I’m being told are never things I’d actually think or say. Before I quit my job I was in constant prayer asking, asking, asking, what do I do? Two things came to me:
- To be a great leader you must do the impossible.
- Give up the thing you rely on the most.
Those are definitely not things I would tell myself. Give up something? Do the impossible? No thanks! But I thought, if God thinks I’m ready, then I’m ready. So I gave up what I rely on (money) and am working on what feels impossible to me (making a living from what I love to do).
So how exactly do I tap into divine wisdom? It’s simple, really. I ask, and then I listen. I go to a quiet place and I ask either through prayer or a Dear God letter. Then I still my mind, my body, my soul and listen. When I hear the answer I write it down. Sometimes it doesn’t come right away and sometimes it doesn’t make any sense...any human sense, anyway, but God has ways of helping me understand.
Take the whole “keep walking” message. I literally made a face when I heard that, but it didn’t take long for me to get it; it was like a V8 slap on the forehead.
The more you tap into the divine, the easier it gets, the clearer the voice becomes. Even though I’ve been spiritual all of my life, I’m just now feeling comfortable going to God with just about everything. Anytime I need guidance I ask the Great Creator first, knowing without a doubt I will receive exactly what I need.
Believe is my word for 2012 and I can tell you that when you really start to put that word into practice, things happen, messages flow, mountains move.
