8 Art Therapy Activities You Can Try at Home to De-Stress

8 Art Therapy Activities You Can Try at Home to De-Stress
Stress is a normal part of life, but some deal with it more than others. You may be bogged down by daily responsibilities, but you can fight against the dreaded cortisol rush. Countless people indulge in art therapy for recovery from hard days at work or comfort for an ongoing illness. The best part about it? Age requirements and expertise are unimportant — anyone can create.

Try your hand at a project or two and reap the benefits of art therapy. Here are eight activities you can try at home.

1. Create a Collage

Stuck on how to convey your artistic vision? Throw anything onto the paper and see where it leads you. Select poster board to allow ample room for letting your mind roam. Print images or cut them out of magazines. Choose pictures that inspire joy, such as relatives or places you've been. Arrange them in a variety of designs, and use high-quality glue to avoid peeling or rippling.

2. Design a Postcard

A postcard provides a therapeutic way for you to express your feelings without saying them. Purchase some cardstock and cut it into the standard postcard size. Draw an illustration on the front or glue something unique, such as a portion of a map. Adorn your card with ribbons, paint or sequins and write your message on the back. Keep it for yourself, or create another to send to a loved one.

3. Mold Clay Jewelry

Beautiful jewelry is one of the finer things in life, and making your own is something to be proud of. Unwind from a long day by gathering supplies for a fun jewelry-making session. Round up beads, chains and charms as well as nitty-gritty tools like wire cutters and pliers.

Create designs on polymer clay by using pigment-based markers — these avoid dissolving into the clay and blurring. Use an oven thermometer for baking your finished product to perfection. Keeping it in too long can scorch it, while a short bake time will leave it spongy.

4. Draw a Mandala

The beauty of creating a mandala lies in the freedom of expression. Use any medium — watercolor, colored pencils or oil paint — and put it on your preferred paper. Gather a few round objects to help you draw circles, or create them yourself using a ruler. Once you've established your circles, fill them with various patterns and colors. The key is to retain symmetry and repetition. These art techniques make up the core design of any mandala, and the repetitive movements can soothe stressed nerves.

5. Crochet a Stuffed Animal

Despite what others say, you're never too old for stuffed animals. And if you don't want to keep your creation for yourself, give it to a relative or friend. Giving gifts can improve your mood and encourage gratitude. Brighten someone else's spirits along with yours.

Make your stuffed animal out of virtually any material — use a pair of denim jeans, lightly worn socks or a t-shirt. Sew old clothing for a straightforward process, or crochet a pattern for a homemade look and feel.

6. Create a Mason Jar Pendant Light

Light up your home with a unique twist by designing pendant lights out of empty mason jars. You'll need a nail, hammer, pliers and shears in addition to the bulb and container. Use the light socket to trace a circle on the lid, and cut this shape out. Line this opening with smaller holes to allow ventilation — your jar will heat up quickly when the light is on. Put the socket through the opening and screw on the lightbulb. Choose an Edison lightbulb for a rustic look, or go with a modern LED.

7. Build a Twine Ball Lamp

Twine lamps embody refinement, but maybe you're reluctant to spend tons of money on them. Thankfully, making your own is cost-effective and stress-free. All you need is a balloon, yarn, paint and glue.

Inflate the balloon to your desired lamp size. Fill a bowl with clear-drying glue and dip the ball of yarn into it. Unravel the yarn and wrap it around the balloon until it's fully covered, then tie the rest of the thread to the balloon knot. Let it dry overnight before popping the balloon. Make it your favorite color using paintbrushes or spray paint.

8. Design Wallpaper Notebooks

Create a handy notebook using wallpaper, scrap paper and a stapler. Your scrap paper can be lined or graph paper, so long as it folds well. Cut your wallpaper to match the size and wrap it around the writing paper. Glue the front and back of the scrap paper to the wallpaper to reinforce it, or staple it for a finished piece.

Relax and Renew

Sit down with a fresh DIY project whenever you feel stress rearing its head. Your tension will melt when you participate in meaningful and fun activities. Grab a couple friends and turn it into a group stress-relief session.

the first step to manifesting and making room for successful magic

First Step to Manifesting and Making Room for Successful Magic
Before any real, positive change can happen you must realize that you are worthy of and deserve happiness. You are meant to show up in this world, shine your light, create, and be happy.

To truly manifest, you must change from the inside out.

Manifesting isn't just about thinking positive thoughts and reciting affirmations – it's digging into your deepest beliefs about yourself and the world around you, uprooting the beliefs that no longer serve you, and getting in alignment with your highest self.

A positive change in thinking creates space for transformation. It allows you to sweep out the cobwebs of self-doubt and invite in miracles and magic. You must, before anything else, make room for the kind of life you want to live.

So how do you do this?

By accepting yourself and claiming your spiritual self-worth. By practicing gratitude and forgiveness.
Every cell and molecule is programmed to lead us to our destiny, but we won't get anywhere if we don't feel worthy of the destination. ~Laura Bushnell

PRACTICE GRATITUDE

By now I'm sure you've read tons of blog posts, articles, and books about the practice of gratitude, but I'm including it here because it really does make a difference. People aren't writing about it because it doesn't work. People are writing about it because it changes lives.

Think about it: when you're always seeking the next big thing, you can't focus on what you already have. Everything you own you once wanted. And it doesn't just stop at material things. You can have gratitude for your health, your body, your relationships, experiences big and small.

You can have gratitude that you opened your eyes this morning and that a zombie apocalypse isn't going on.

Gratitude allows us to appreciate what we already have, which in turn allows for more goodness to fill our lives. But even if nothing else ever came to you, gratitude creates contentment.

You could be perfectly happy knowing that you have everything you need. And when you really get down to it, you probably have everything you need in abundance. The bare necessities: water, food, shelter, clothing. How many outfits are in your closet? How many times did you eat today? Does water flow from your tap? Will you crawl into a comfy bed tonight?

These are things that are so easy to take for granted if you've grown up with them. They're almost expected, but many people in the world aren't afforded simple needs, much less small luxuries and pleasures.

Place gratitude in your heart. Wake each morning with a spirit full of love knowing that you are divinely blessed.
Picture

You can practice gratitude by keeping a thank you list and filling it out each day, week, or month. Whatever feels right for you. List everything you can think of, from the crème brule you had for dessert to the half mile you were able to run. There are so many things to be grateful for.

PRACTICE FORGIVENESS

Forgiveness is powerful in that it releases us from our own bondage. Many people find forgiveness challenging because they think by forgiving the person who wronged them, they're getting a free pass.

The truth is, when you hold a grudge, when you don't forgive someone, you're only hurting yourself. The pain stays inside you while the other person moves on.

It's important to understand that forgiveness does not mean that what the person did to you was right. It only means that you take back the power and release yourself from the pain the person caused.

One way to look at it is to think of the people who may have wronged you as teachers. They showed up in your life to teach you something, to be stronger, to look at things in a new way, to sympathize with others who may have had similar experiences.

Also know this, that just because you forgive someone doesn't mean you have to let them back into your life. You don't even have to like them. You just have to imagine a line that stretches from your heart to theirs and pain moving through that line like electricity. Break the line. Say, “You may go in peace,” or whatever feels right to you in order to break free.

It's also important to note that sometimes the person we need to forgive the most is ourselves. Have you ever held something over your own head that served as a reason for why you should “get what's coming to you”?

Once upon a time I did something I couldn't forgive myself for. I hurt someone I loved very much in a way that just seemed despicable to me. Even though this person forgave me, I couldn't forgive myself for many years and any time something bad happened to me or someone hurt me, I said I deserved it for what I had done in the past.

The truth is, the past is the past and we've all let our shadow selves overpower our higher selves at some point, but there comes a time when we must let our higher selves forgive those dark parts. I let my ego run amok when I hurt that person, but that is no longer who I am. What's done is done and the curtain's dropped on that situation.

Whether the other person forgives you or not, you must cut the ropes around your own hands. Let it go, breathe it out, and move on.
Picture

You can practice forgiveness by writing down your resentments on a piece of paper. Try something like, "I release all my anger towards x. I give it up to the universe for my highest loving good." Then, light sage in a smudge bowl, place your paper in the fire, and let the smoke take it up and away from you.

Self-care for the mind, body, and soul

This is a contributed post and may contain affiliate links.

It’s about time that we
did more for ourselves. If you actually think about all of the things that you do in a day, you will most likely think of all of the things that you’re doing for other people. You’ll go to work to work for someone else, you’ll go and do the shopping to cook dinner for your family, you’ll go to social events because it’s someone else's birthday. You’ll just be doing things that aren’t for the benefit of yourself, because you don’t actually enjoy doing them.

You go to work because you have to earn a living, and you’ll do everything else because that’s the pattern of life that most of us fall into. But this truly is not the way that life should be. You should start focusing on the ways that you can do more for yourself, so that when you look back on a day, it wasn’t just filled with the norm that you have to do. So that you can actually feel like you’re bettering yourself. So if you know you need to make some changes, hopefully this article will inspire you to do so!

End Your Mental Struggle

Now it’s about time we spoke about this, because so many of you will be going through a mental struggle that you just don’t see ending. It’s so easy for us to think that we’re alone with our mental health issues, and that no one around us is going to understand what we’re going through. So we bottle it up, and we let it get worse and worse as the months go on.

But if you were to just reach out and use platforms such as
Supportiv, you’d find a whole different side to your mental health. You’d realize that so many people are going through what you’re going through. It helps to connect with people who are going through the same thing, and understand it from someone else’s perspective.

Take Up A Hobby

It’s so important to have a hobby, especially if you want to start doing more for yourself. Having a hobby is all about having that time just for you to do something that you truly enjoy. You don’t have to bring anyone along with you, so it can be your own little passion and escape from the world. It doesn’t have to be anything too technical, it could just be a swimming lesson each week, or even just an arts and crafts group!

Leave The Things That Aren’t Making You Happy

A final note to start taking action on is to leave the things that aren’t making you happy. Surrounding yourself with negative vibes at work, or in your relationship, really isn’t the way to go about things. Practice focusing on you, and the things that make you happy because life is precious and we only have this moment.

Easy ways to look and feel beautiful

Easy Ways to Look and Feel Beautiful
via Pinterest

This is a guest post by Fiona Adams.

The way we look doesn't always reflect the way feel about ourselves. There are days when we feel off, and not even an ocean of compliments can help. That's because feeling attractive is much more than how we physically look.

If you're one of those people who feel that way, it's time to stop self-criticizing and start boosting yourself up. It doesn't require any drastic moves. There are small steps that you can take that will increase your self-confidence and change the perception that you have of yourself.

Here are some easy ways that will help you both look and
feel beautiful.

1. EMBRACE YOUR FLAWS

Focusing on your flaws instead of your virtues is probably the biggest obstacle on your self-loving journey. Nobody's perfect, remember that. The only difference lies in accepting all those little imperfections of yours and embracing them as the things that make you unique. They are part of who you are.

If you hate your scars, start treating them as memories because that’s what they are. Stand in front of the mirror and take a good look at yourself. Instead of focusing on all the things you don’t like, how about switching your focus on the things you
do like. Bring them to your attention and treat them with love and kindness. That’s the first step towards loving yourself, and when you get there, you’ll realize how beautiful you really are.

2. EVOLVE YOUR LOOK

It goes without saying that beauty comes within. However, sometimes changing your hairstyle or a makeup routine can trigger that change in perspective you need. When you start seeing yourself in a different light, it can help bring back that self-esteem that you thought you’d lost.

Science has proved that hair and eyes are the first things that we notice when we meet someone for the first time. Having that in mind, it’s no surprise that the eyebrows have been a thing everyone is buzzing about in the last couple of years. The good news is that now you can get perfect eyebrows that you’ve always dreamed of. If you’re looking for the right way to do it, ask your friends to recommend you a good beauty studio like
Lash Blossom and try a microblading technique. It will not only change the way you look but the way you feel, too.

3. BEAUTY AND THE FEAST

You are what you eat is something we can all agree on. The choice of food we consume directly affects not only the way we look, but also the way we feel. In order to boost your energy levels and immune system, introduce some healthy habits into your diet.

You don’t have to take drastic measures. Take baby steps. Prep and plan your meals carefully and do the grocery shopping on an empty stomach. That will stop you from purchasing all those unhealthy snacks that you may regret later. Instead, try to base your diet on fresh fruit and vegetables. Foods rich in protein are good for the recovery of your muscles. Antioxidants fight fatigue and help remove toxins from your body. Citrus fruit is rich in vitamin C while whole-grain bread will provide you with fiber.

When you start eating healthy, you'll sleep better, have more energy, and be in a great mood. When you feel good, you'll look good too.

4. GET YOUR SWEAT ON

One of the most important changes you need to make on this transformational journey is to start exercising regularly. Physical activity is known to have numerous health benefits on both body and mind. When you workout, your blood flow increases and provides the cells in your body with fresh oxygen. The levels of bad cholesterol and your blood pressure go down while the endorphins go up.

So-called feel-good chemicals are the reason why we always feel good after a workout. Aside from that, exercising regularly will strengthen your core and tone your muscles. You’ll get rid of the pain in your back and neck and correct your posture. You’ll feel and look strong and nothing can boost your self-confidence more than that. We can gladly agree that
strong is the new pretty.

These are the ultimate tips that will help you boost yourself up. Introducing these healthy habits into your daily routine will reap huge rewards. Loving yourself starts with accepting yourself as you are, beautiful, and taking the world with bells on, flaws and all.

The Healing Powers of Aromatherapy

The Healing Powers of Aromatherapy
Photo by Vero Photoart on Unsplash
Perhaps you’ve always wanted to know more about the healing power of aromatherapy, but have felt intimidated by the descriptions of the different qualities of essential oils, varieties of diffusers, or methods of practice.

You should know that aromatherapy is easy and something you are already probably practicing. If you use ginger to help you with an upset stomach or drink chamomile tea to relax at night, you are already practicing aromatherapy. It’s no more complex than using a eucalyptus based product to help you clear your sinuses.

Essential oils or incense can enhance the qualities of scents, giving them a greater degree of efficacy. But generally, the practice is little more than what you are probably doing already. With a small amount of knowledge, you can continue to use aromatherapy more effectively, and address specific issues with the scents that can assist you with alleviating them.

Vanilla, for example, is great for insomnia, lemon can help you reduce stress, orange has even been shown to combat PTSD. Along with these emotional properties, the right aromas can reduce pain or lower blood pressure.

FragranceX (not affiliated - just thought they had some cool info to share) has put together a handy infographic that quickly outlines some of the most popular aromatherapeutics. They are all naturally based and when used as directed they are effective in helping to alleviate symptoms of many different physical or emotional ailments.

Check below for more information on aromatherapy and how best to use each element.

1 Minute Coffee Magick

Coffee is one of those things that so many of us drink and don't give a second thought to. But like anything, if we put intentions behind it, it becomes magical.

Even without intentions and incantations, coffee is pretty magical, especially on those days when you just can't get started or focused. Then you pour or purchase yourself a cup and let the steamy brew work its magic as it wakes up your mind and body.

As busy witches, I realize it's much easier to grab a morning Starbucks on the way to work, but for coffee magick to be more personal and powerful, it's worth preparing your own.

But either way, you can use a cup of brewed coffee, and even coffee beans and grounds, to stir up some daily magic. The best part is, these magical workings don't take a lot of time, which is great for us lazy...I mean busy witches. :P

coffee magick tips

☕ Use espresso beans for speed and concentration.

☕ Use a cold press brewing process to slow things down.

☕ Use drip coffee to push past obstacles.

☕ Pour a dark blend coffee into a black mug, light a candle, and look into the liquid. Let your focus soften. Do you see anything? Journal about what comes to you in this scrying session.

☕ Sprinkle fresh coffee grounds on your altar to add focus and help move spells/intentions along.

☕ Place coffee beans wherever you keep your tarot cards to cleanse them of negativity and add positive energy for your next reading.

two simple coffee spells
to add magic to your day

Incorporate this simple coffee spell into your morning ritual. It's quick, easy, and is a positive way to start your day.

Stirring in All Good Things

As you stir your coffee in a clockwise direction, envision something good happening to you by the end of the day or think of a few qualities you'd like to infuse your day with. Maybe you'd like happiness, laughter, and love or creativity and passion. Continue stirring as you envision these things and think or say out loud, "These things I draw to me as I drink this cup of magic coffee." You may wish to blow your breath (filled with those intentions) into the coffee cup before sipping.

Rainbow Light Spell

This coffee enchantment is adopted from Llewellyn's Spell a Day.

Cup your hands around your cup of coffee and envision it glowing with rainbow colors: first red, then orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, and white. When you're ready, put your nose to the cup and inhale deeply, letting all the light fill your body. Then think or say, "May this libation fill my body, my mind, and my spirit. May I be awake, aware, and blessed this day (or use your own words if you'd like to call in different things). Amen, a'ho, and so it is."

Happy sipping!
