Balanced Heart Chakra
When balanced, the fourth chakra is like a lotus blossoming and stretching its petals of love and healing out to the world. In the same manner it also invites love and healing for the self. The balanced heart chakra will allow you to see yourself for who you are and love that person just as she is. It's like the clouds clearing to reveal the sun; your light will shine and people will notice, and why shouldn't they?! You have so much to offer this world.
Unbalanced Heart Chakra
The unbalanced fourth chakra is a yucky, muddy mess. The need for love outside of oneself takes over. Feelings of jealousy, greed, despair, and loneliness are common. The unbalance creates the need for validation, which makes it hard to give love freely because there is a feeling of emptiness. This can cause you to guard your heart, put up walls, and take love wherever you can get it. Naturally, an unbalance will cause problems in relationships. It's happened to me many times; I starved for attention and validation and without realizing it, demanded that my partner make up for the lack of love I had for myself. This is an impossible request, as no one can love you as much as you can. Even if you hear 10 praises a day, if you do not have love and compassion and respect for yourself, other people's validation will mean nothing to you. It will never be enough.
Opening the Heart Chakra
Dearest love warrior, if you feel like you're experiencing any of these negative feelings, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine the lotus of your heart unfurling as you breathe out. Use some of the suggestions below to help open the heart chakra:
Drink a cup of chamomile tea; start a gratitude journal and list five things you love about each day (download a pocket gratitude diary from Goddess Guidebook ); take a warm bath infused with herbs like chamomile and lavender; light candles scented with grapefruit, peppermint, or ylang ylang; wear rose quartz close to your heart; dance naked; practice compassion and forgiveness for yourself; help someone in need.
