I’ve been contemplating a (mostly) raw food diet for some time now, especially when I joined the Goddess Guidebook Circle and read about the Create the Radiant Goddess in You e-course (click the Goddess Circle badge on the sidebar for more info). The recipes looked so fresh and yummy, plus, I’m a horrible cook and going raw seemed much easier. Unfortunately, convenience has won out for a long time; the grocery store is packed with boxed and preserved foods, one skillet meals, frozen pasta lunches. It makes me sick. I stopped eating red meat and pork 10 years ago, but I still feel lousy. Fresh and raw is just not the American way.

Last night I watched Food Matters, a documentary that validates everything I’ve been thinking. Raw is good. Fresh is good. Organic is good. This kind of diet paired with exercise and vitamins and supplements can change your life. I was especially interested to find out that nutritional therapy can not only prevent disease, it can cure it.

See, the problem is that medical professionals don’t go to the root of the problem. A patient goes in for cancer and gets treated with chemotherapy, medication, and therapy, and sometimes the cancer goes away…for a little bit. Instead of treating the problem at the core, doctors put a band aid on it and hope you don’t notice there’s still a wound under there. And think about what comes from “treatments” like chemo: nausea, weakness, hair loss. The scary thing is, in some countries, it is illegal to treat cancer patients with anything other than chemo, surgery, and FDA certified medication.

There is no money in healthy people.

When you go to the doctor, what is your experience like? Mine involves me waiting in the patient room for at least 20 minutes, the doctor visiting me for no more than 10 minutes, and prescribing me pills. There’s no discussion about why I’m feeling bad or how to prevent it; it’s if you have an ill, here’s a pill. I’ve been on and off antidepressant medication for almost 12 years for this very reason, and I was more recently put on cholesterol medication. Why? Because pills cure everything. Then why is it that on almost every antidepressant’s side effect list is “may cause depression or thoughts of suicide”? Isn’t that what it’s supposed to be curing?! I’m not saying doctors and medication aren’t needed. Some doctors are really good at what they do and provide the care that we need, but the cure for chronic problems is not in a pill.

The solution is realizing that we are what we eat. What we put into our bodies really does make a difference. We were never meant to eat processed, packaged food. We were never meant to consume as much as we do. And what’s more is that our bodies are already equipped with everything we need to fight off the bad stuff, but by feeding it toxic, processed food and not getting the appropriate amount of nutrients, we damage its ability to stay strong.

The good news is this can be reversed!

My honey and I have vowed to go (mostly) raw for the month of August to see what happens. I say mostly because we will include rice and very little amounts of chicken in our diet. For the most part, it will all be raw and as fresh as we can get. Also on our list of things to consume: a multivitamin and a dose of Spirulina. I will continue taking cranberry supplements and fish oil. I’m really excited about this, as I feel like it will lead to more energy, more focus, less illness, not to mention, the possibility of ditching my dependence on prescribed medication for good.

I know this may sound like a whole lot of New Age goobly gop, but I urge you, URGE you to watch Food Matters and tell me what you think. Did it change how you feel about food and health?
