Halloween Movies for Millennials

Halloween Movies for Millennials

If you grew up in the 90's and reached young adulthood in the 2000's, you are a millennial. And if you're anything like me, you probably spent the better part of October watching Halloween programming and gearing up for the costume party you never attended.

I'm 34 and still love watching those same movies. Maybe it's the nostalgia, because honestly, many of these movies only became blockbusters in my heart. They weren't award winners, but they were entertaining, and isn't that what it's all about?

Every year I watch these movies to get into the Halloween/autumn spirit. I'm sure you've heard of them and probably watched them too, but perhaps this list will serve as a reminder for some of you. Stir the memory of those nights spent swooning over Devon Sawa (Casper) and wishing you could live in the Practical Magic house.

the nightmare before christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas
Shirt Design by The Shirt List
Instant classic. Do you remember the anticipation of this movie? Do you remember when they re-released it in theaters for the 3D screen? The songs, the artwork, the memorabilia! This is one of my favorite movies of all time and is watched annually in my household. Like it or not! Okay, it's just my husband and I and he enjoys it too, so it's not like pulling teeth or anything. :) But, I'm pretty sure I enjoy it way more than he does and I absolutely must sing the songs.

casper

Casper

I saw this movie for two reasons: 1) it seemed cool and I was a fan of Christina Ricci and 2) Devon Sawa. I remember sitting in the theater and thinking, When is he going to appear??! At the very end of the movie. Lame. But, I still enjoyed it. In fact, I liked it so much that I created some stupid little game for my friends and I to play that involved us choosing characters from the movie. I don't remember what the game was about, but I do remember the rule that no one could choose to be Kat or Casper because I didn't want anyone fighting over the most popular characters. So I became Stretch and my other two friends became Stinky and Fatso.

Also, here's a photo of Devon Sawa in 2015.

beetlejuice

Beetlejuice

Another classic. Did anyone else draw a door on his/her bedroom wall with chalk and knock on it hoping it would open? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? And I connected with Lydia. "I myself am both strange and unusual." Maybe not as much as I did with Wednesday, but I think I'm saying that because I never dressed up as Lydia for Halloween. It was always Wednesday.

the addams family

The Addams Family

How could I not include The Addams Family in a movie list for millennials? My favorite scene...

Wednesday Addams

the witches

The Witches
The Witches was based off the book by Roald Dahl and it's the story of a boy who stumbles upon a witch convention. I haven't watched this one in several years; it's one of those I forget about, but when it does cross my mind I remember what a fun story it is.

death becomes her

Death Becomes Her

Morbid. Funny. A commentary on the lengths some people will take to remain young and beautiful. If you haven't seen this movie, put it on your to-watch list now! You won't be disappointed.

practical magic

Practical Magic

Practical Magic is everything we love about this time of year: old houses and magic spells and witches, zombie men and kitchen witchery and midnight margaritas. Weeeee!

hocus pocus

Hocus Pocus

I remember going to my friend's house and sitting on her mom's bed to watch this movie on the little television in the bedroom. It was always dark and cool. My friend was slightly afraid to watch this movie, so she'd hide her eyes inside blankets and pillows. For what reason, I still don't know. This is the least scariest movie, unless you find eccentric witches spooky.

halloweentown

Halloweentown

I haven't actually watched this movie in years, maybe since the early 2000s, but I do remember enjoying it for its Halloween packed goodness. And did you know you can visit Halloweentown?

If you've watched all those and still crave more 90's Halloween "horror" check out these:
  • Scream
  • Idle Hands
  • Sleepy Hollow
  • The Crow
  • The Blair Witch Project
  • The Silence of the Lambs
  • Se7en
  • The Craft

Did I miss anything? What's your favorite Halloween movie?

THere's Always a Party Underneath the Palms

Weekend in Dumaguete

Friday, October 7 -

Went to a ladies luncheon for the first time since moving to Dumaguete. We ate at a Chinese seafood restaurant located above a Mexican restaurant on the boulevard. It was just one open room with all the windows open and some ceiling fans. I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but the dish I had was nice - seafood tofu. It was a big bowl full of clams, shrimp, squid, veg, and tofu. I also nibbled on some stir-fried rice and fried oyster. Yum!

I went to the lunch because I still don't know that many people here and it's hard to connect with others, at least for me, and especially connect with ex-pat women. This group consists of ex-pats and local ladies and they meet somewhere different every Friday afternoon. I was the youngest one there (this time), but I don't care. I enjoy the company of older folk. So yes, I did meet some wonderful people and will definitely be going to another lunch soon.

Saturday, October 8 -
Hubs and I went to a friend's birthday house party. He lives in an apartment complex of sorts, but around here it doesn't matter if you blast the music and party all night. Generally, people don't do that, but if you do, no one is going to call the police. People just accept the fact that there might be an all-night party at some point. I don't know if the birthday went all night - we left around 3pm or so. There was barbecue and potato salad, rice, loads of beer and wine and soda. Some of the other girls and I swam in the pool, or rather, floated on noodles and lounged on the pool steps to cool off.

Sunday, October 9 -
Most of Sunday was spent outside with Ezra (my pet goat). I let him browse the property, free range style, in hopes that he wouldn't eat the decorative plants. He did all right, for the most part, although there were times when I had to scoot him away from the pretty plants he loves so much. I lounged in the hammock and kept an eye on him while he cut the grass. Sometimes he'd hop onto the patio and try and ninja his way into the house (we keep the doors open nearly all day). He didn't seem to understand the "no livestock in the house" speech I gave him. He also doesn't understand the word "no." :P

Sunday night, Hubs and I went to another birthday party; this one was for all the Libras (my husband included). We drank, ate red velvet cupcakes, drank some more, danced to the live band, drank some more. It was around 11pm that the girls and I decided to go to the club. Mind you, this is a group of 20-somethings, and although I'm not too far past my 20s, I still feel the age difference when it comes to trying to keep up. Oh yes, I danced like there was no tomorrow and drank the flowing beer...then went outside and sat on a park bench with my husband while the girls kept dancing. To be honest, I don't think I ever had that much energy, even when I was a 20-something. No matter though, I had a lot of fun.

We have friends flying in from Puerto Galera (where we just moved from) this Friday, so there will be more adventures and delicious food, maybe a party or two, because it's always party time under the palms.
