Tapping into Divine Wisdom

How do you know when the Spirit is talking to you? How can you tell whose voice is whose? Do you want divine advice and guidance, but don’t know how to get it?

I’ve been tuning in for awhile now. Sometimes it’s initiated by me, other times I just get smacked over the head with messages. God talks to me through dreams and songs, books and poetry, fortune cookies, nature, and whispers.

But how do I know it’s Spirit’s message and not my own? I could say I just know, but that’s not very helpful. Usually the messages are either a) something I don’t want to hear and make me fidgety or b) make me think. There are the simple, sweet messages too, like a heart-shaped rock on a bad day or a random quote that turns out to be exactly what I needed to hear.

I know it’s Spirit talking because the things I’m being told are never things I’d actually think or say. Before I quit my job I was in constant prayer asking, asking, asking, what do I do? Two things came to me:

- To be a great leader you must do the impossible.
- Give up the thing you rely on the most.

Those are definitely not things I would tell myself. Give up something? Do the impossible? No thanks! But I thought, if God thinks I’m ready, then I’m ready. So I gave up what I rely on (money) and am working on what feels impossible to me (making a living from what I love to do).

So how exactly do I tap into divine wisdom? It’s simple, really. I ask, and then I listen. I go to a quiet place and I ask either through prayer or a Dear God letter. Then I still my mind, my body, my soul and listen. When I hear the answer I write it down. Sometimes it doesn’t come right away and sometimes it doesn’t make any sense...any human sense, anyway, but God has ways of helping me understand.

Take the whole “keep walking” message. I literally made a face when I heard that, but it didn’t take long for me to get it; it was like a V8 slap on the forehead.

The more you tap into the divine, the easier it gets, the clearer the voice becomes. Even though I’ve been spiritual all of my life, I’m just now feeling comfortable going to God with just about everything. Anytime I need guidance I ask the Great Creator first, knowing without a doubt I will receive exactly what I need.

Believe is my word for 2012 and I can tell you that when you really start to put that word into practice, things happen, messages flow, mountains move.

The Secret to Quitting Your Job...or doing anything really scary

So you want to do something scary like quit your job or let go of toxic friends or launch a new product, but don't know how? Me too...so I did.

It's been four days since I resigned from a job I've had for 2 1/2 years, but I also feel like I've resigned from 12 years of working for someone else. My first real job was at age 17 when I went to work for the local newspaper. I can't even remember my title - some piddly position - and although it was in a field I enjoyed, it didn't feel right. The next 12 years felt exactly the same.

Enough is enough, don't you think? When your spirit is jumping around in your body and the whole universe is saying, "Stop this madness!" it's time to let go. But how?

I have some big fat loans that still need to be paid and rent and all the other monthly bills that come with life. While working a full-time job I've had plenty of money to cover the needs and wants. After the first of next month, I will no longer have cash flow. What I will have is precious time. Even if I have to hustle, I'll be hustling for something I care about. So how did I get over the fear?

Here's my big secret...

Mindset. It's all about mindset.

Think about the worst that could happen once you do that big, scary thing. For me it's that I won't make any money from my projects, I use up all my savings, I can't pay the bills, I lose my car, and I have to get another full-time job. It would suck, but I would survive.

One thing that always, always helps me is getting out of my head and remembering that I am a tiny person on a tiny planet that is swirling through a gigantic universe full of chaos and somehow still in one piece. It makes me feel small, but in a good way. When I look at myself from the cosmos, I realize how tiny my problems really are and that if God can manage a universe, he can surely see me through my situation.

Fears aside, you must believe with every ounce of your precious little heart that things will work out for your good. Even if the path is rocky (and it will be) and plans change (they will), you will be okay. You will survive, just like you always have. You will be taken care of, just like you always have.

I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen and that's okay. It gives me the chance to put my faith in action. It requires me to take it one day at a time instead of looking into the future and imagining disaster. I am here right now and right now is all I have so I have to give it my all.

If your soul is telling you to take the risk, face the fear, get a move on, do it! Plan if you must, but just know that there will never be a perfect moment. The future is not some mystical paradise where all your dreams come true. That place is already here. The time is now.

All Great Journeys Begin in the Middle

Here we are in the sacred middle. This is where our journey begins. We let go of the past and have a vision for the future, but this is where we begin.

Sometimes when in the middle we feel scared, frustrated, or stuck. The past was comfortable and the future looks promising, but the middle is a place of uncertainty. How do we begin when we're not sure where we're going? How do we move in the direction of our dreams when it feels like the ground beneath us is shaking?

Where you are is exactly where you need to be.
In the middle you can be still and listen for divine guidance.
You can also start walking and create a new path.

There will be times of doubt and fear; they'll try blocking the path you're walking, but they won't succeed. You'll break them down with your bravery, climb over them with your strength.

Just remember to cherish the middle. Life can be beautiful now. Stop looking for the far off mystical paradise. It is here now in this sacred place.

This is where the journey begins.

I resigned from my job today and I can't tell you how light my shoulders feel. It may be that the craziness hasn't fully set in or because I still have money in the bank, but I'm going to treasure this feeling of freedom.
