Live Longer, Healthier, and Happier

I’ve been contemplating a (mostly) raw food diet for some time now, especially when I joined the Goddess Guidebook Circle and read about the Create the Radiant Goddess in You e-course (click the Goddess Circle badge on the sidebar for more info). The recipes looked so fresh and yummy, plus, I’m a horrible cook and going raw seemed much easier. Unfortunately, convenience has won out for a long time; the grocery store is packed with boxed and preserved foods, one skillet meals, frozen pasta lunches. It makes me sick. I stopped eating red meat and pork 10 years ago, but I still feel lousy. Fresh and raw is just not the American way.

Last night I watched Food Matters, a documentary that validates everything I’ve been thinking. Raw is good. Fresh is good. Organic is good. This kind of diet paired with exercise and vitamins and supplements can change your life. I was especially interested to find out that nutritional therapy can not only prevent disease, it can cure it.

See, the problem is that medical professionals don’t go to the root of the problem. A patient goes in for cancer and gets treated with chemotherapy, medication, and therapy, and sometimes the cancer goes away…for a little bit. Instead of treating the problem at the core, doctors put a band aid on it and hope you don’t notice there’s still a wound under there. And think about what comes from “treatments” like chemo: nausea, weakness, hair loss. The scary thing is, in some countries, it is illegal to treat cancer patients with anything other than chemo, surgery, and FDA certified medication.

There is no money in healthy people.

When you go to the doctor, what is your experience like? Mine involves me waiting in the patient room for at least 20 minutes, the doctor visiting me for no more than 10 minutes, and prescribing me pills. There’s no discussion about why I’m feeling bad or how to prevent it; it’s if you have an ill, here’s a pill. I’ve been on and off antidepressant medication for almost 12 years for this very reason, and I was more recently put on cholesterol medication. Why? Because pills cure everything. Then why is it that on almost every antidepressant’s side effect list is “may cause depression or thoughts of suicide”? Isn’t that what it’s supposed to be curing?! I’m not saying doctors and medication aren’t needed. Some doctors are really good at what they do and provide the care that we need, but the cure for chronic problems is not in a pill.

The solution is realizing that we are what we eat. What we put into our bodies really does make a difference. We were never meant to eat processed, packaged food. We were never meant to consume as much as we do. And what’s more is that our bodies are already equipped with everything we need to fight off the bad stuff, but by feeding it toxic, processed food and not getting the appropriate amount of nutrients, we damage its ability to stay strong.

The good news is this can be reversed!

My honey and I have vowed to go (mostly) raw for the month of August to see what happens. I say mostly because we will include rice and very little amounts of chicken in our diet. For the most part, it will all be raw and as fresh as we can get. Also on our list of things to consume: a multivitamin and a dose of Spirulina. I will continue taking cranberry supplements and fish oil. I’m really excited about this, as I feel like it will lead to more energy, more focus, less illness, not to mention, the possibility of ditching my dependence on prescribed medication for good.

I know this may sound like a whole lot of New Age goobly gop, but I urge you, URGE you to watch Food Matters and tell me what you think. Did it change how you feel about food and health?

The Planets Advise Magical Expression

I always look forward to the weekly astrological predictions from the twins over at Astrostyle. In this week’s forecast, Ophira and Tali mention producing a magical expression of ourselves to share with the world. Besides totally loving that phrase, it got me thinking...how do we go about magically expressing ourselves?

I think all too often we place importance on what’s outside of who we are: how we dress, what hairstyle we have, where we work and who our friends are. Those are all perfectly great and do serve as expressions, but I want to dig deeper. Who is the woman at your core and how do you express her?

I think we can become magical expressions by shining light on the things we love about ourselves...our passions, our personality.

Some ideas: Spruce up your office by displaying artwork that inspires you – even your own; smile and say hello to strangers that pass by (how often do we ever look strangers in the eyes?); write a poem celebrating you and post to your blog; take pictures and put them on Flickr; share with the world all your loveliness!

Be a beam of light - a magical and sparkly expression of who you are!

Spirit Exercise:

What one thing can I do today to magically express myself?

Write out your own horoscope for the week and predict all the goodness that will come into your life.

Doodle/paint/sketch/collage your magical self. Hang it somewhere you’ll see to remind you that you are beautifully unique and ready to share your magic with the world.

We want to see YOU!

Gypsy love,
Cassandra

Open Your Heart Chakra and Invite Love In

The Fourth Chakra, also known as the heart chakra, is found at the center of the chest and represents our ability to love ourselves and others. Loving ourselves opens the heart door to abundant love. We are more able to give and receive love when we accept who we are. Loving yourself will create happy, balanced relationships since there won't be any need for you to look outside of yourself for happiness. Balancing the heart chakra is like opening a door to abundant love!

Balanced Heart Chakra
When balanced, the fourth chakra is like a lotus blossoming and stretching its petals of love and healing out to the world. In the same manner it also invites love and healing for the self. The balanced heart chakra will allow you to see yourself for who you are and love that person just as she is. It's like the clouds clearing to reveal the sun; your light will shine and people will notice, and why shouldn't they?! You have so much to offer this world.

Unbalanced Heart Chakra
The unbalanced fourth chakra is a yucky, muddy mess. The need for love outside of oneself takes over. Feelings of jealousy, greed, despair, and loneliness are common. The unbalance creates the need for validation, which makes it hard to give love freely because there is a feeling of emptiness. This can cause you to guard your heart, put up walls, and take love wherever you can get it. Naturally, an unbalance will cause problems in relationships. It's happened to me many times; I starved for attention and validation and without realizing it, demanded that my partner make up for the lack of love I had for myself. This is an impossible request, as no one can love you as much as you can. Even if you hear 10 praises a day, if you do not have love and compassion and respect for yourself, other people's validation will mean nothing to you. It will never be enough.

Opening the Heart Chakra
Dearest love warrior, if you feel like you're experiencing any of these negative feelings, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine the lotus of your heart unfurling as you breathe out. Use some of the suggestions below to help open the heart chakra:

Drink a cup of chamomile tea; start a gratitude journal and list five things you love about each day (download a pocket gratitude diary from Goddess Guidebook ); take a warm bath infused with herbs like chamomile and lavender; light candles scented with grapefruit, peppermint, or ylang ylang; wear rose quartz close to your heart; dance naked; practice compassion and forgiveness for yourself; help someone in need.

Bonus:

A beautiful video about the presence of love <3

Happy heart openings, sweet gypsy loves!
